More than 600 Supporters Attend Protect Our Cape Fear Benefit

Stop The Dump Concert Fills Kenan Auditorium

March 17, 2006, Wilmington, NC—More than 600 supporters attended a benefit  concert Sunday night to stop an auto shredder residue (ASR) dump from locating in the Cape Fear region. The multi-national corporation Sims-Hugo Neu has bought property on Mount Misery Road in Navassa—across the Cape Fear River from Wilmington—to build a 350-foot mountain of waste. A grass-roots citizens’ group, Brunswick Citizens for a Safe Environment (BCFSE), formed to block the plan, is receiving increased attention.

The evening’s entertainment featured folk and country music, including two original songs: “Mount Misery Hill,” by Jim Clare, and “Landfill in my Soul,” by Catesby Jones. On stage, Catesby Jones quipped: "There's a bet at City Council to see whether the new convention center or Hugo Neu reach the height of ten stories first." Jones is co-writer of the Travis Tritt hit single, “I’m a Member of the Country Club.”

Other performers included Dave Bohn, John Golden, Tommy Hutchinson, Geoff Morris, and Dee Braxton Pellegrino, a fiddler who brought the house to its feet with “Orange Blossom Special.” The entertainers received four standing ovations during the evening.

President of Brunswick Citizens for a Safe Environment (BCFSE), Veronica Carter, urged concert goers to contact representatives Bonner Stiller and R.C. Soles who can introduce legislation to stop the dump.

Proceeds from the concert will go toward continued efforts to fight the location of Sims-Hugo Neu in the Cape Fear Region. Next events where BCFSE will circulate petitions to stop the dump are Earth Day in Wilmington, April 22, and the North Brunswick County Spring Festival, April 29. Visit the website at http://stopthedump.com.
