N.C. Coastal Federation Don’t Dump on the Coast! SUPPORT H1093 – MORATORIUM ON LANDFILLS CONTACT YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVE TODAY
Four regional mega-landfills are proposed for our coast, in Camden, Hyde, Brunswick and Columbus Counties. If these landfills are permitted, North Carolina, currently a net exporter of waste, will become the fourth largest importer of waste in the country, taking in millions of tons of trash from other states. A bill imposing a moratorium on new landfills passed the state Senate and is currently before the state House. An eighteen-month moratorium would allow for a commission to study solid waste disposal and make recommendations to improve North Carolina’s solid waste policies and in turn, benefit our economy, public health, and environment. In order to prevent North Carolina from becoming the dumping ground for the eastern United States, please take immediate action to get this bill passed. The House must pass H1093 to prevent North Carolina from becoming the east coast’s dumping ground. Three of the four proposed landfills would be taller than the Cape Hatteras lighthouse and stretch lengthwise for miles. Before we do permanent harm to our coast’s landscape and tourism economy, we need to take this time-out to examine the state’s ability to handle this new waste stream and how to best protect our economy, communities and environment.
Action Needed ASAP: The bill is likely to be considered on the House floor by Friday, July 21. Please email AND call your legislator and ask them to vote YES on H1093 exactly as it passed the Senate!

Coastal License Plate Seen Across The State
Ocean, NC– All across North Carolina, more and more vehicles are sporting the specialty plate created by the North Carolina Coastal Federation. More than 1,000 people have purchased a North Carolina Coastal license tag that promotes the important message to “Protect our Coast.” “We’re averaging more than 100 new sign-ups a month,” stated Todd Miller, N.C. Coastal Federation Executive Director. “It’s exciting to see so many fans of the coast promoting stewardship. And, of course, while we’re getting our message out across the state, the program is raising funds for our restoration and protection work.” The Federation launched its license plate program in late 2005 with 300 applications. Since then the program has grown considerably. The tags have already generated more than $13,000 for the nonprofit environmental group, and this figure is expected to swell to more than $50,000 in the coming years. Each plate generates $15 for the Coastal Federation and $10 for other state programs, including welcome centers and the highway beautification program. The N.C. Coastal Federation has worked with citizens for almost twenty-five years to protect the coastal creeks, rivers, sounds and beaches of North Carolina. The Federation is the state’s only nonprofit working full-time to protect and restore the state’s coast. Their headquarters is located in Ocean, NC and they have field offices in Manteo and Wilmington. The full color specialty plates can be ordered at local license plate agencies, at the Division of Motor Vehicles web site at https://edmv.dot.state.nc.us/sp/SpecialPlatesPortal.html (search under “N” for “North Carolina Coastal Federation”) or by visiting NCCF’s website www.nccoast.org or calling NCCF at 252-393-8185. |
