Amnesty International Issues Appeal in

Troy Davis Death Penalty Case

Atlanta, GA.—Amnesty International, the award winning human rights organization, has issued an appeal on behalf of Troy Anthony Davis, a Georgia black man accused of the murder of a police officer in Savannah in 1991. Davis, who has been on death row for sixteen years, was given a death sentence, recently upheld when the Georgia State Supreme Court denied appeals for a new trial. AIUSA has renewed its call for re-examination of the sentence and the use of the death penalty in Georgia, asserting that in the conviction that hinged entirely on the basis of witness testimony, seven of the nine non-police witnesses have since recanted or altered their testimony.  In its appeal to the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles AIUSA has collected more than 60,000 signatures in its petition campaign.
