Iraq War—Winter Soldier Hearings Held March 13-16 North Carolina Press Dumps the Story
Silver Spring, MD—Details about the events remain sketchy, but reports of the testimony are slowly emerging. Ultra patriots and other radicals on the Right have already condemned the event as a Left-wing rant against the U.S. military—designed to allow mentally unhinged vets a chance to vent their spleen with stories that prove nothing more significant than “war is hell” and “in war, bad things happen to people.” Major news media across the U.S. have so far chosen to ignore these events, while here in the state of North Carolina, newspapers from major urban areas, including Asheville, Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, Fayetteville and Wilmington have also refused to cover the story. But at Silver Spring, MD., on the weekend of March 13-16, through events disturbingly reminiscent of the Vietnam War, veterans from U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan gathered to participate in hearings sponsored by Iraq Veterans Against the War. The hearings have revealed harrowing accounts of murder, the abuse of non-combatants, including women and children, and outright torture of people who frequently were little more than helpless victims caught in the mire of war and military occupation...
